A Brief History

Scothorn Equipment started during 1977, by refurbishing an old building that had 600 square ft. We realized a need in the area for a local repair and sales business that would shorten travel and down time for the local forestry workers. Scothorn Equipment took on the Partner franchise, a Swedish company, which was a leading name in the forestry industry in the seventies. The business began with one employee, Gary Scothorn, who did sales and service as well as maintenance of Scothorn Farms equipment.

Within two years Scothorn Equipment expanded and took on two new franchises to offer a better variety of product for our customers. The first line was Husqvarna, also a Swedish company, the second was Echo. This offered our customers a full range of products and prices. Thanks to our customers, business was growing at a steady pace.

In 1980 the business continued to expand with a new facility of 3300 square ft being built. It was now time to think about diversifying. During 1982 the partners decided to go into the agricultural business and took on Hesston Farm Equipment. Hesston offered the Prime Line, haying , harvesting and Fiat tractors sold under the Hesston name in North America.

With the continuing growth in our product lines and service requirement it was necessary to do another expansion. A new showroom was built to display our growing product line. A few years later the Fiat company decided to sell its tractors direct in Eastern Canada with the Fiatagri name and continue with the Hesston harvesting and hay tools.

In 1994 Fiat acquired the Ford/New Holland farm Equipment line, making Scothorn Equipment the local franchisee for New Holland in the central area of Nova Scotia. This was not the end of our changes. In 1996 our customers showed us that the trend was going to larger more efficient equipment. A new service bay was added. Early in 1997 the parts department was moved into the old service bay. The new facility of 7000 square ft. offers our customers a complete line of products for consumers, forestry, agricultural and industrial markets with leading manufacturer names: New Holland, Farmi, Walco, and Supreme. Through these manufacturers we are able to offer a wide variety of equipment for our customer needs.
